When choosing a practitioner (whether they are conventional medical doctors or CAM professionals; click here for suggested guidelines), keep in mind the following issues:

  • What is the practitioner's success record in treating others with your specific condition?
  • Have you seen a copy of the practitioner's credentials and license?
  • Does the practitioner seem inclined to treat you, the whole person? or just your illness?

The NARM certification process recognizes multiple routes of entry into midwifery and includes verification of knowledge and skills and the successful completion of both a Written Examination and Skills Assessment. The CPM credential requires training in out-of-hospital settings.

The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) is an international certification agency whose mission is to establish and administer certification for the credential "Certified Professional Midwife" (CPM). CPM certification validates entry-level knowledge, skills, and experience vital to responsible midwifery practice. This international certification process encompasses multiple educational routes of entry including apprenticeship, self-study, private midwifery schools, college- and university- based midwifery programs, and nurse-midwifery. Created in 1987 by the Midwives' Alliance of North America (MANA), NARM is committed to identifying standards and practices that reflect the excellence and diversity of the independent midwifery community in order to set the standard for North American midwifery.

NARM affirms that skilled and responsible midwives should be readily available to all families in North America. NARM affirms the autonomy of the independent midwife, the critical importance of her role as guardian of normal birth, and the value of her compassionate, skilled, and woman-centered care. NARM affirms a woman's right to choose her birth attendants and place of birth and to involve those she identifies as her family in the bonding of the birth experience. NARM affirms the safety and viability of planned, midwife-attended birth at home, in hospitals, and in freestanding birth centers.

Certification shall not be construed as defining midwifery in its entirety. NARM acknowledges that midwifery encompasses attributes that defy measurement. NARM intends CPM certification to sanction and build a foundation to support midwives' work while recognizing that their individuality of practice best reflects the needs of the communities they serve. Through CPM certification, NARM seeks to advance the midwifery model of care, to facilitate its integration as a vital component of the health care system, to ensure its wide availability to pregnant women and their families, and to preserve their freedom of choice.

ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE is the comprehensive, cost-effective, proactive cause-oriented, patient-centered and preventive strategic approach to medical care dedicated to the evaluation, management, and prevention of the adverse consequences resulting from ETI.

OPTIMAL HEALTH is a sustained state of optimal physical, neuro/cognitive, psychological, and social well being. It is achieved and sustained by an active, ongoing expenditure of metabolic energy to insure a homeodynamic stability of interacting biologic functions despite the dynamically changing potential for disruption from all environmental and internal stressors.

ENVIRONMENTALLY TRIGGERED ILLNESSES (ETI) are the adverse consequences that result when the homeodynamic interactions among biological functions are compromised by external or internal stressors. These stressors may range from severe acute exposure to a single stressor, to cumulative relatively low-grade exposures to many stressors over time. The resultant dysfunction is dependent on the patient's genetic makeup, his nutrition and health in general, the stressors, the degree of exposure to them, and the effects of seven fundamental biological governing principles: biochemical individuality, individual susceptibility, the total load, the level of adaptation, the bipolarity of responses, the spreading phenomenon, and the switch phenomenon.

Homeopathy

Ph: (503) 761-3298

Email: hanp@igc.apc.org
Website: www.healthy.net/hanp

Free national referrals to credentialed naturopathic physicians who use homeopathy in their practice.

Homeopathy is a medical art and science which uses tiny doses of natural medicines to stimulate the body's own inherent healing abilities. The homeopath works to understand each person's unique mental and emotional makeup, striving always for individualization. Homeopathy's central principle is known as the law of similars, "Like Cures Like." People have observed since ancient times that a substance which causes an illness or a symptom can, in very small doses, cure the same problem by rousing the organism to retune itself.

Homeopathic medicines are among the safest known: non-allergenic, non-toxic, and free of side effects. They are prepared from herbal, mineral, and animal substances by special pharmacies, according to FDA specifications, and selected by the physician after an extensive interview and assessment. The indicated remedy is the one which is truly homeopathic (most similar) to the patient. Classical homeopathy, as originally developed and taught by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), uses only one remedy at a time.

The in-depth interview process delves deeply into the patient's physical, mental, and emotional being. People appreciate the individualized care provided by their homeopathic doctor, knowing that they have been listened to and understood.

The Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (HANP) is a specialty society within the profession of naturopathic medicine, and is affiliated with the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Our purpose is to further excellence and success in the practice of homeopathy by naturopathic physicians.

Provides free national referrals to naturopathic physicians who are credentialed and appropriately licensed.

A Healthy World Through Healthy People. Our view of naturopathic medicine is that naturopathic medicine is the "general practice" of alternative medicine -- virtually all the disciplines represented in what might be called the "mainstream" of alternative medicine (if that isn't an oxymoron) are taught in the recognized naturopathic colleges: nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture and oriental medicine, lifestyle counseling, physical medicine, etc. NDs are trained as primary care physicians in natural medicine, and most of the states which license them provide a scope of practice which enables an individual to use an ND as their primary care physician.

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) is the national professional society representing naturopathic physicians who are licensed or eligible for licensing as primary care providers. Policy is established through a House of Delegates, which consists of representatives from 34 state naturopathic associations, four naturopathic specialty societies and the four recognized naturopathic medical programs.

Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine

First, do no harm. A thoughtful diagnosis should be made before exposing the patient to any potentially harmful procedure.

Look beyond the disease for the cause. Treatment should center on the cause, with effect addressed only when it benefits the patient in some tangible way.

The practice of medicine should be based on sound medical principles. Only therapies proven clinically beneficial in improving patient outcome should be recommended.

The body is subject to mechanical laws. The science of physics applies to humans. Even a slight alteration in the body’s precision can result in disorders that overcome natural defenses.

The body has the potential to make all substances necessary to insure its health. No medical approach can exceed the efficacy of the body’s natural defense systems if those defenses are functioning properly. Therefore, teaching the patient to care for his own health and to prevent disease is part of a physician’s responsibility.

The nervous system controls, influences, and/or integrates all bodily functions.

Osteopathy embraces all known areas of practice.

Excerpted from A Historical Perspective on the Philosophy of Osteopathic Medicine, by Robert E. Suter, D.O., based on the writing of A.T. Still.

Body-Psychotherapy is a distinct branch of Psychotherapy. It involves a different and explicit theory of mind-body functioning which takes into account the complexity of the intersections and interactions between the body and the mind. The common underlying assumption is that the body is the whole person and there is a functional unity between mind and body. The body does not merely mean the "soma" and that this is separate from the mind, the "psyche". Many other approaches in Psychotherapy touch on this area. Body-Psychotherapy considers this fundamental.
